Yohei, last week CMC held no sponsored parties. We all understand that you need a break from throwing events and that there has been an increase in alcohol-related incidents at CMC. Is there anything else you can tell us in terms of what to expect in the future and what really happened?

The following is an “official response” written by Brad Walters, ASCMC President.

Brad Walters“I am deeply sorry to anyone who was inadvertently offended by the promotion of the White Party. ASCMC is a responsible and diverse organization that always aims to be sensitive to its constituents and community. The problem here was a failure of communication; the party’s theme was in no way related to race, but that was poorly communicated.

The White (People’s) Party…?

While washing my dirty laundry in the Stark Hall laundry room, I ran into Bri Riggio who told me about the recent “controversy” sparked by the Scripps Dean of Students, Debra Wood. From what I hear, local news outlets and protesters will be coming to the Class of 2010’s (extremely racist?) White Party tomorrow night.  (It is worth mentioning that the Class of 2010’s President and host of the party is African-American.)

Understandably, this is more gossip than news, so this is the actual e-mail sent to the Scripps College student body earlier today (thanks to Charles Johnson for the text):

Subject: Racist/Sexist Material on Campus

Sometime in the last few days, the CMC class of 2010 left racist and sexistDebra Wood, Dean of Students, Scripps College party invitations with what appears to be a racist party theme on the dining room tables at Scripps College, Malott Commons.
